Jan's Story
Jan Hetherington is a renowned Glass Artist in the Western District, and prides herself in creating “that special gift” in kiln formed glass, accompanied by limestone sculpture.
Jan began her career as a Fine Artist in 1992, painting in brightly coloured oils a series of big, bold and vivacious “fat ladies”. Many would know them as “Jan’s Gorgeous Gussies". After many exhibits and Art Shows throughout Victoria, accumulating various accolades along the way, Jan decided to explore other mediums including Limestone Sculpture. Then, in 1996, Jan fell in love with the art of kiln formed glass. Jan says: “Who’d have thought the two art forms would marry each other superbly”.
With the motivating and unconditional support of her loving late husband Maurice, who also played a valid role up until 2007, creating unique steel stands for select glass pieces such as “The Furphy Collection” and more, ‘Jan’s Fine Glass’ travelled the popular markets and field day circuit locally and interstate each year. Life was good!
Now, Life is still good but in a different way. Jan recently refocused her creative energy by travelling through glorious France and Italy. Completely absorbed by the stunning European backdrop and art culture, “I came back with a new set of eyes and fresh ideas.” – Jan.
After many trials and errors, and endeavouring to take on Maurice’s “stand” making role, Jan’s skill and knowledge continue to develop and broaden, experimenting in various methods of glass slumping, fusing and limestone sculpting. Jan’s Gallery boasts an extensive range of one-off centrepieces and fine dining glassware.
Jan exhibits and sells her work at a handful of select markets and galleries in Victoria and South Australia (see shopping page) in addition to her own gallery.
Jan's studio and gallery is based at her "Aringa" property in Minhamite, Western District - where she happily welcomes potential buyers (by appointment). Workshops are available and bookings can be made to order. |
