Jan Hetherington is a renowned Glass Artist in the Western District, and prides herself in creating “that special gift” in kiln formed glass, accompanied by limestone sculpture.
Jan began her career as a Fine Artist in 1992, painting in brightly coloured oils a series of big, bold and vivacious “fat ladies”. Many would know them as “Jan’s Gorgeous Gussies". After many exhibits and Art Shows throughout Victoria, accumulating various accolades along the way, Jan decided to explore other mediums including Limestone Sculpture. Then, in 1996, Jan fell in love with the art of kiln formed glass. Jan says: “Who’d have thought the two art forms would marry each other superbly”. With the motivating and unconditional support of her loving late husband Maurice, who also played a valid role up until 2007, creating unique steel stands for select glass pieces such as “The Furphy Collection” and various other pieces. ‘Jan’s Fine Glass’ travelled the popular markets and field day circuit locally and interstate each year. Life was amazing! Now, Life is still amazing but in a different way. Over the past 16 years, Jan has refocused her creative energy by travelling extensively through Europe! Completely absorbed by the stunning European backdrop and art culture each time, “I always come back invigorated with a new set of eyes and fresh ideas.” – Jan. Jan relocated to Port Fairy almost seven years ago from her Western District farm and studio ‘Aringa’ at Minhamite of 40 years. Jan’s collection boasts an extensive range of one-off centrepieces, games and fine dining glassware. Her classic games in glass include; Snakes and Ladders, Dominos, Solitare, Scrabble and Chinese Checkers – the perfect addition to the coffee table. Commissions and Workshops are available on request and Jan also makes to order. Jan’s Fine Glass studio and gallery is open between 11am and 4pm most days when the flags are displayed at her gallery at 8 Model Lane, Port Fairy. |
